The news this month that Brian Epstein’s statue has finally been granted planning permission is a fitting tribute to a prominent LGBT figure during LGBT+ History month.

The statue will honour Brian’s role in the story of the Beatles, as well as his contribution to the Liverpool music scene, helping elevate The Beatles to worldwide fame while also managing Liverpool musicians including Cilla Black and Gerry and the Pacemakers.

The statue will be located near the site of his family’s music shop, NEMS, which is close to the Cavern Club where the Beatles played and the Liverpool Beatles Museum, where he and the band are honoured today.

Brian sadly died shortly before homosexuality was legalised in the UK, but he is remembered as an iconic figure in the 60s music scene and will be the first LGBT figure honoured with a statue in Liverpool City Centre.

Paul McCartney famously referred to Brian as the “fifth Beatles” and is said to be “delighted” with the plans for the statue.
